What’s in the Co-op Bag?

A month or so ago, I was planning to join a CSA. In the time between contacting and finally hearing back from them, I had another offer from my friend Mary: I joined her produce co-op.

It’s somewhat similar to the CSA, but different. Co-op members – I think there are about 12 – pay $10 a week. A co-op member takes the money to the Farmer’s Market, shops and divides the stash equally. I go to a member’s house each Tuesday afternoon to pick up my produce.

It’s been a lot of fun so far. I love opening the bag each Tuesday to see what I have! Most of the time, there are staples that I can use in each bag, including but not limited to apples, kiwi, grapes, strawberries, green beans, sweet potatoes, broccoli. It encourages me to break out of the rut, try new stuff and/or find creative ways to use what’s in the bag.

Today, I am most excited about the fresh green beans and a whole pineapple. I’ve never prepared either from fresh, so it will be an adventure.

On the flip side, I also got a batch of turnips (with the greens attached) this week. If you’re a turnip fan, let me know – they are free to a good home. If I don’t have any takers, I’ll have to try one. Don’t make me have to do that. Please.
